At what rate does Gmail refresh itself? Does it depend on the browser? How to change it?

I want Gmail to refresh itself more often than what it does actually, instead of pressing F5 every time.At what rate does Gmail refresh itself? Does it depend on the browser? How to change it?
well on firefox gmail refreshes itself instantly when i get an email im not sure about any other browser
